Arriving in India: A New Chapter Begins
When I stepped onto Indian soil on August 31, 2024, I was 19, full of excitement and anticipation. Coming from Nice, France, I had chosen to volunteer with El Shaddai Charitable Trust as part of my business studies. This journey was my decision, a path that would shape me in ways I never imagined.
First Impressions: A Warm Welcome
Arriving in Goa, I was immediately struck by the warmth of the people. From my first meeting with Julia Kurian, the NGO director, to the friendly faces at Little Acorns Centre, I felt embraced by a new family. The children, calling me “Didi” with bright smiles and outstretched hands, melted away my initial nervousness. I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.
The Slum School: Teaching Beyond Words
One of my most cherished experiences was teaching in the slum schools. Despite language barriers, we connected through smiles, songs, and simple lessons. The children’s eagerness to learn, their resilience, and their love deeply moved me. Whether it was Pooja and Sooja’s playful energy or Rehman’s quiet determination, each child left a mark on my heart. Seeing them progress, even in small ways, was incredibly rewarding.
Life at Little Acorns: Finding Purpose in Everyday Moments
At the centre, my days were filled with serving meals, playing games, and assisting in classrooms. Each morning, children would greet me with hugs, their affection overwhelming in the best way. Watching little Kaushal grow from a shy, tearful boy into a confident, happy child was one of my proudest moments. The relationships I built—with both children and staff—were genuine and full of joy.
POCA Event: Raising Awareness for Child Protection
One of the highlights of my internship was participating in the Prevention of Child Abuse (POCA) campaign. In Panjim, we gathered with hundreds of children and staff for a day of performances and awareness activities. Seeing the children I worked with confidently take the stage was unforgettable. El Shaddai is more than an NGO; it’s a family that empowers and uplifts.
The Hardest Goodbye
Leaving was heartbreaking. My last day was an emotional whirlwind—tears, hugs, and laughter as children and staff bid me farewell. When the children cried, I realized just how deep our bond had become. But rather than sadness, I chose gratitude. I left knowing that I would return one day, to see how they had grown, to remind them they are loved.
A Forever Changed Heart
Returning to France, I felt different. The individualism I once knew felt distant compared to the warmth of Goa. I had seen firsthand the power of education, the strength of love, and the beauty of resilience. I learned that communication isn’t just about words—it’s about understanding, patience, and connection.
My time with El Shaddai was not just an internship; it was a transformation. I carry with me the faces, the laughter, and the lessons learned. India has left an indelible mark on me, and for that, I am forever grateful.
A Poem from My Last Day:
Leaving
Going down the stairs one last time
Thinking of everything I leave behind
Hoping they’ll remember me
Hoping they’ll remain happy
Somewhere between then and now
I’ve changed
Turning 20, I’m an adult somehow
I tell
Going back to France with a heavy heart
India has left on me a forever mark
These kids will become wonderful people
Their love with me forever I’ll hold.
With love,
Ellen
