Empowering Goa’s Children: 19 Days of Child Abuse Prevention

While Goa is abuzz with the National Games, a constant flow of tourists, and preparations for various events, there is an important voice that demands attention—the voice of children. As Goa continues its path towards urbanization and becoming a sought-after tourist destination, the risk of rising crime rates and exploitation, especially against children, becomes more apparent. The recently reported increase in crimes against children reinforces this concern.

Thankfully, El Shaddai Charitable Trust, in collaboration with the Women’s World Summit Foundation (WWSF), has undertaken the responsibility of raising awareness about child abuse and protecting children through a 19-day program called “Prevention of Child Abuse” (POCA). Running from November 1st to November 19th, this program amplifies the plea from children and those dedicated to their safety, emphasizing the need to shield our children from various forms of abuse and violence.

The campaign commenced on the early morning of November 1, 2023, with a bicycle rally starting from the Calangute Panchayat premises. The rally, flagged off by PSI Viraj Naik, saw the participation of over 120 children who cycled from Calangute Panchayat through Arpora to Anjuna, then to Assagao, and returned to Calangute via Mapusa. Following the rally, a brief program featured Mr. Matthew Kurian, the founder of El Shaddai Charitable Trust, Kajal Wadhwani, owner of Kalki Resort, Saurabh Khanna, General Manager of ‘The Park Hotel’ in Calangute, Sr. Vanshree from Bosio Hospitals, and other staff members of El Shaddai Charitable Trust.

Mr. Matthew emphasized the campaign’s significance, stating, “Child abuse takes various forms, such as sexual abuse, verbal abuse, forced labor, corporal punishment, and bullying. India boasts a robust economy but is also home to a significant number of children facing abuse, hunger, and deprivation. Programs like this aim to awaken the conscience of those in power and everyday individuals to collaborate for a safer India and Goa for our children.”

El Shaddai Charitable Trust has been dedicated to helping underprivileged children for over two decades, providing education, food, shelter, and clothing. The organization operates multiple shelters across Goa, where children receive education and nourishment. Over these 19 days, various activities, including street plays and dances, will take place in major towns and cities of Goa, such as Margao, Vasco, and Panjim, to reach a wider audience. Children from the organization will be educated about recognizing safe and unsafe touches and will, in turn, educate other children when visiting slums, shelter homes, and streets. Children are like delicate flowers in a garden, deserving the utmost care and protection to preserve the beauty and joy that emanates from their smiles.
