El Shaddai Charitable Trust has been working on providing workable, self sustaining assistance to alleviate poverty and sufferings of people living in poor communities. On 6th October 2010, El Shaddai organized its first ‘Loan a Goat project’ in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. We were able to provide Goats to 25 needy families in the Village of Kotoli. All the beneficiaries were living below the poverty line and their average daily wage was a meagre Rs. 25 per person. Most of the people here were under bonded labour for generations. The two main forms of employment were Brick making and Sugarcane cutting. Years ago they had taken loan from the owners for their personal needs and they were not able to repay the loans. Adding to that, the high interest rates ensured that the loan is never repaid. They therefore ended up working all their lives for the same owners for very low income.
Our Goats program may not be able to liberate such families from their debts or bonded labour, but these Goats will definitely assuage their sufferings a little. The Goats provide milk for the family and manure for their kitchen garden so that at the very least they and their children will never go hungry.
Through these years with the help of our generous Sponsors, El Shaddai has been able to provide a pair of male & female goats to poor & needy families. These families have expressed their sincere gratitude towards this project which has improved their sustainability. The villagers are extremely thankful to El Shaddai Charitable Trust for the gift of the goats.
