STEPPING STONES, MARGAO

The month of September saw a gradual increase in the children attending the Shelter with about 35 to 40 children on a daily basis and were given non formal education by Myllian, duly assisted by our staff David. Besides the food and medication, the children’s hair and nail clipping was done. Clothes and other personal hygienic articles were also issued. Stationery was provided and parents were counselled. Older boys, like Laxman (56) and Ninga (59) from the Homes have been assisting in the shelter activities.

A special programme was organised for the school children on the occasion of Ganesh holidays. The first day saw the children participate in the cultural activities. The second day they were put to test with a quiz competition. The next day saw different games organized for the children. The fourth day of the holidays, children’s skills were put to test in the drawing/painting/craft competition. The fifth day too saw the children exhibit their talents in the cultural programme and Sweets were distributed. The Children whole heartedly participated in a Quiz, drawing and craft competition organized for them.

Many visitors have blessed us with their time and generosity this month. Chocolates, fruits, eggs, pastries, cakes and sandwiches have been brought and distributed to the children. Visitors have also blessed us with their time and talents. Music, assistance, advice and help and also donations. We had Ms Heidi Hawkins visiting the shelter and she interacted with the children. We also appreciate Ms. Saglani and Mr Savio for visiting the Shelter and generously donating. We had a new staff Ms Deepti (fieldworker) joining us at the Shelter.

These coming months we expect to reach out to those children who cannot come to the shelter. We plan to interact with the children at the far away slums and undertake teaching them the basics of education and hope to reaching out to as many children as possible at the construction sites, beaches, markets and industrial areas.

The month of October promises to be a very fun filled month. The tourist season will open up and the children are looking forward for various activities in school. The staff is also gearing up for October as there is going to be a sharp rise in the number of children visiting the Shelter. More children will mean more opportunity to help children enjoy childhood.

The noise and dust of November carried itself into December as the repair and maintenance work of the Shelter continued. Workmen were part and parcel of the Shelter all this month and as the repairs are extensive we believe it will spill over into the next year. In spite of all the commotion and the noise we were able to attend to more than one thousand four hundred children. The children are enjoying the time as right before their very eyes very nice things are being produced especially by the carpenters. Non formal education has been carried our on a daily basis and all the staff has chipped in and done their part. (more…)
