Visitors donate generously towards Asha Deep needs list

The month of February was a quiet month compared to the hectic month of January with all the celebrations and parties. This month on an average 35 children availed the facilities provided. 72 children came to Asha Deep this month. Our former child Raghu is with us as a Night Shelter child till he finds alternate accomodation. Floyd who came to us from Stepping Stones was moved t Shekinah House after a week here. We did all in our capacity to help this boy and we are glad that he has been treated. The staff have been involved in non formal education and some new matter has been taught. Dadima came back after having recovered from the hurt rib.

Loukesh has joined us as a cook. Yvonne our Assistant In-Charge has completed one year in the service of the children here. Our In-Charge, Ramdas has also begun rounds of the markets, fish jetty and slums in an effort to get fieldwork back and running like before. Lawrence is being trained as a cook by Loukesh. The Shelter ran smoothly although we did feel the absence of Dadima. We did not face any major medical challenge this month. Floyd was treated for wounds on his legs and Shiva was taken to the local health clinic and administered a anti tetenus injection after he injured his leg while returning from school.

The children were taken to Mira Mar beach every week as part of their weekly outing. They enjoyed themselves playing in the sand. Football, cricket, twos and threes, runing races etc. followed each other. It was amazing to see the energy these children have. What was truly remarkable was the behaviour of the children. Many of them once used to beg and brawl on this very beach and now they enjoy themselves as childen should. In the Shelter after lessons end at 3:pm the children get involved in indoor games like building blocks, puzzles, snakes and ladders etc. Painting and drawing are a way of life for the young ones. T.V. programmes are enjoyed too.

Children and staff of Asha Deep wish to thank all the visitors who came and blessed us with their time and presence. Visitors and their friends have come and donated generously towards the needs list of the Selter. The very first day of the month saw a new washing machine being installed at AD. A week later 30 study desks were given to students. A week after that a new DVD player was also donated by visitors. Besides these there were others who made donations of provisions and sweets. We thank each and everyone of you for your kind heartedness. You have gone and put a smile on the faces of our children. We also thank the medical staff of health centres and hospitals who have attended our children and taken care of their ailments. We also thank friends such as Pam Akers who visit once or twice a week and spend time with children and also lend a helping hand to staff. All of you help run this Shelter and your assistance is highly appreciated.

The coming month is a month of hard work. The final examination is fast approaching and the children are busy with their studies. The staff have to scout schools for fresh admissions for children wantin to go to school. Easter and other summer fetes and festivals will commence. We are looking to help more children and make our Shelter true to its name Asha Deep which means Lamp of Hope.
