Busy month ends with Santa’s party

The Shanti Niketan School and its students experienced a busy month of December. Right from the very beginning there were different activities, some of which took the children to different venues for widely applauded performances. There were also wide maintenance and repair work carried out at the administrative block of the school.

The students went visiting two libraries; one in Assagao and the other in Mapusa as part of their ‘Reading Week’

They had a thousand questions to ask the librarian and were amazed at the wide subjects under which books were available. They were also impressed at the way the books were maintained and restored. Some of the students showed great interest in calligraphy. The second excursion this month was the visit to the National Institute of Oceanography at Dona Paula as part of technology week. The older children were immersed in the various apparatus on display there. What held their attention the most was the different equipment that is used for the Antarctic expeditions. On December 19th which is also the Goa Liberation Day our students performed at the Bal Mela (Children’s Fair) held at Don Bosco School at Panaji. Two dances were performed and the applause was great.

The second installation ceremony of the Junior Red Cross was held at the school. This year students of grade V were also inducted into the society besides the students from grades VI and VII. The Chief Guest was Mr. Mohan Tendulkar, Administrative Officer-in-Charge, Indian Red Cross Society, Goa. Anita Edgar, co-founder El Shaddai was the guest of honour. Safety week was observed in the school and the students were instructed on various safety aspects like school, street, personal and fire. The personnel from the fire department, Mapusa, lectured and even gave a live demonstration on fire fighting. Students from grades I, II & III took part in an English Quiz. 4836, is the number of words Niroshan formed from 13 letters in an internet competition. It took him four days and a little help from his friends and teachers. He was declared the winner. We are all very proud of him.

Santa paid a visit to the school and shared in the Christmas celebrations with the children on the 22nd of December. Children had carol singing and also a musical skit by senior students depicting the events leading to the birth of Jesus Christ. The children enjoyed themselves with the activities and snacks and soft drinks. The Christmas holidays began with the conclusion of the party. The school reopens on the 3rd of January 2008.

The outstanding students of this month were Anita 576, Sunil 580, Amit 459, Shahrukh 314, Sunita 393, Rebecca 286, Manju 499, Raju 98, Pamma 68, Nagappa 62, Dharmesh 317 and Priya 364. Our hearty congratulations to all of them.

As the year draws to a close we have already prepared a list of activities for the month of January. Our hope remains that we can provide quality education to many more children who will in turn have a better future as a result of the same. The students, teachers and management wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year 2008.
